The Sanjoaninas, festivals dedicated to São João, fill the streets of Angra do Heroísmo for ten days in June. Processions, musical concerts, bullfights (in arenas or on ropes), food stalls offering local delicacies, theater performances, fireworks displays, and sports competitions reach their climax during the popular marches parade on the night of São João.

Praia da Vitória Festival, held in the picturesque coastal town in August, offer an equally engaging experience with outdoor concerts, folk dances, and a variety of gastronomic and sporting events that celebrate Azorean culture in a festive and welcoming atmosphere.

One of the most emblematic celebrations is the Festival of the Holy Spirit, where the community gathers around ancestral rituals that include the distribution of the “Império” shared food, and drink in an atmosphere of joy and sharing. Additionally, bullfights on ropes, unique to this island, are a tradition deeply rooted in local culture, where brave bulls face courageous participants in a display of courage and skill.

The parish festivals on the island reach their peak during the months of June to September, offering a rich tapestry of local celebrations, from religious processions to cultural festivals, highlighting the unique identity of each community and enhancing the experience of visitors.
