Mill House

Angra do Heroísmo has always been a place of mills, traditions and history, where the ingenuity of man and the strength of the waters moved the millstones that transformed the cereal into flour.
The history of Ribeira dos Moinhos is intertwined with that of the first men who set foot on the ground in Angra. With the arrival of the first settlers, and the foundations of the settlement being laid, the search for water currents was soon imposed, which would not only guarantee the population’s supply, but also, after the expected abundant harvests, would allow the establishment of capable mills to ensure the flouring of cereals.
The importance of mills and their hydraulic use is evidenced by the high number of these constructions. Cereal milling was the first industry on the island of Terceira.
Over the centuries, the exploitation of the industrial potential of Ribeira dos Moinhos has seen notable growth, which transformed Angra into a true industrial city, contributing to its development.
