Álvaro Martins Homem is said to be the founder of the village of Angra, which was made a town in 1478 and a city on 21st August, 1534. The statue of Álvaro Martins Homem, the work of the sculptor João Fragoso, was inaugurated in the Praça Velha square on 17th June, 1960. Later, in 1984, the statue was removed and placed on the roundabout of the new avenues.
