The Church of Imaculado Coração de Maria in Biscoitos, Terceira, was built between 1961 and 1965, being the first church of modern architecture on the island. The construction faced financial challenges and acceptance issues within the community, but it relied on the volunteer work of dozens of people and material donations. Parish priest Francisco Borges Ávila led the process, facing criticism and local rivalries. Despite the difficulties, the church was completed and dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
