Angra has had three city halls. The first city hall had a small square in front. Later, the trade from India and the importance of the city led to the construction of a larger square and a new building with lateral staircases, a portico with columns, and a bell tower. The existing city hall was built in the nineteenth century and was inspired by the Oporto’s old City Hall. It has one of the largest and grandiose great halls in the country.
The Town Hall of Angra do Heroísmo is one of the rare cases in Portugal of a building created from scratch to house the city council. Inside this building there are rare, valuable pieces.
