Monte Brasil Natural Reserve
Monte Brasil is an extinct volcano that emerged from the sea to join the city of Angra do Heroísmo. Today, it is a protected landscape and the city’s natural park. Monte Brasil has excellent viewpoints, and tree and shrub species that are of special interest. The Castle of São João Baptista (Saint John the Baptist), on Monte Brasil, is one of the largest and most important forts that the Philippine Dynasty built in Portugal at the end of the sixteenth century. This area is inviting for relaxing walks and has a hiking and walking trail, called Monte (Mount) Brasil, duly marked and recognized by the Regional Department of Tourism.
