Going to the baths in Fanal was very common in the first decades of the 20th century. With a practically submerged pontoon, still perfectly visible today, the place delighted bathers at that time. However, the accentuated marine influence that was felt, associated with earthquakes such as the 1980 earthquake, caused the cliff to retreat about 40 meters in the last 100 years.
The recreational use of this site and later the accessibility to it was made impossible, a fact made worse by the water from public sanitation that had been diverted to this location.
Works were carried out to protect the shore, taking advantage of the opportunity to defend the bay, with the access to the sea having been rebuilt, which had long since disappeared.
